Finding the Right Balance: Assessing the Impact of Globalization on National Economies

Globalization is characterized by the growing pressures on the welfare state by decentralized law-making procedures, changing notions of government, and issues of democratic accountability. In this context, large corporations assume an increasingly important role in dealing with the rights and interests of workers and consumers, as well as in supporting sustainable development.

As the Canada Research Chair in Transnational and Comparative Law of Corporate Governance, Professor Peer Zumbansen is exploring the impact of globalization on national economies by examining the changing nature of capitalism in globally integrated markets. His research focuses on businesses and networks at all levels. As he assesses business activities in different political and market contexts, he is producing valuable insights into the organizational challenges faced by governments in regulating business conduct. Overcoming these challenges is crucial as governments attempt to balance society's interests with the ability of companies to self-regulate.

Dr. Zumbansen's research is also exploring broader questions concerning political sovereignty and the changing relationship between the state and the market. Particular attention is being paid to the European Union, Canada, and the United States.

Widely published in both German and English, Dr. Zumbansen is the co-founder and co-editor in chief of the German Law Journal (http://www.germanlawjournal.com). His Chair at York University is enriching Osgoode Hall Law School's interdisciplinary approach to legal studies by drawing on his extensive research experience in comparative corporate governance and public law.
