In developing economies, institutions’ written rules and unwritten norms can affect the operations of the multinational enterprises (MNEs) that do business there.
Dr. Aloysius Newenham-Kahindi, Canada Research Chair in International Sustainable Development, Inequality and Social Innovation, is exploring why governance under informal institutions works, how MNEs can honour and adjust to these institutions, and how they can fail if they don’t adjust. Newenham-Kahindi and his research team hope that by contributing nuance and predictive power to these understandings, their work will help firms navigate the complex institutional risks that can otherwise keep them from investing in social solutions to poverty, unemployment and environmental issues.
