Canada Research Chair Prabhat Jha awarded Order of Canada

July 6, 2012 | Prabhat Jha, Canada Research Chair of Health and Development, has recently been made an Officer of the Order of Canada. He received the award in recognition of his contributions to epidemiology and to the economics of global health, which have influenced the development of global health policy.

As a Canada Research Chair, Jha studies premature death among the global poor, focusing on the two largest and growing causes of death worldwide—HIV-1 and tobacco. By collecting and analyzing data, Jha has been able to gauge the various risk factors and develop new intervention tools to control these major causes of premature death.

Currently an epidemiologist and professor at the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health, Jha is also the founding director of the Centre for Global Health Research, an independent, not-for-profit organization co-sponsored by St. Michael’s Hospital and the University of Toronto.
