Research summary
It is increasingly evident that mainstream mental health and addiction services are not meeting the needs of Indigenous peoples. Indigenous mental health and addiction leaders and Indigenous communities suggest that these conditions must be understood in holistic ways, respectful of culture and context.
As Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Mental Health and Addiction, Dr. Christopher Mushquash’s research will identify culturally and contextually appropriate areas for implementing interventions, identify approaches that show promise for treating mental health and addiction issues among Indigenous people, and develop and test novel approaches for treating them. They will also disseminate new knowledge in Indigenous, scientific and clinical communities, and among policy- and decision-makers.
