Research summary
Dropping out of school and learning difficulties are likely to influence the development and social integration of young people. Frédéric Guay, Canada Research Chair in Academic Motivation, Persistence and Success, studies the psychosocial factors that motivate students to stay in school and succeed.
In particular, he and his research team are examining the academic success and perseverance of students with learning disabilities, first-generation immigrant students and boys. Studying the retention and success of these subgroups is essential, as they are known to have significant achievement gaps and are at greater risk of experiencing a variety of difficulties in their school careers. The knowledge gained from their work will not only allow for intervention with youth who are experiencing difficulties in school, but can also be used to support parents and teachers in their efforts to promote student success.
