Developing new optimization methods to improve health care planning and delivery.

Research relevance

This research will make it easier to coordinate the human and material resources of Canada’s health care systems.

Research summary

The aging of populations in Canada and many other industrialized countries is putting enormous pressure on health care costs. To help address these, Dr. Louis-Martin Rousseau, Canada Research Chair in Health Care Analytics and Logistics, is trying to come up with ways to ensure better prediction, accuracy and organization in health care, taking into consideration the needs of each individual.

Rousseau and his research team are working in three areas. They are conducting applied research in the analytics and logistics of cancer treatment, home care and complex hospital care. They are also developing a new generation of approaches (combining AI and optimization) to support sequential and real-time decision-making in health care. Finally, they are adding a human component to the organization of care to ensure equity and inclusion in how it is delivered and organized. Their work will increase the efficiency of health care in Canada while facilitating the planning and delivery of increasingly personalized treatment plans.
