Research summary

Canada and other countries around the world are developing innovative initiatives to address the UN Sustainable Development Goals and promote the human rights of marginalized groups. Yet Canadian children with disabilities and their families continue to face challenges such as unequal access to health care, social services and education. As Canada Research Chair in Childhood Disability: Participation and Knowledge Translation, Dr. Keiko Shikako is working to remove these barriers.

Shikako and her research team are looking for ways to create healthy, inclusive communities for children with disabilities. They are also developing knowledge translation strategies that can bridge the gap between research on childhood disabilities and evidence-based public policies. Ultimately, they hope to contribute to critical, timely research evidence that will support children with disabilities and their families.
