Research involves

Interviewing people about transnationalism, mobility, privilege and cosmopolitanism to gauge how individuals confront cultural differences and inequality.

Research relevance

This research will shed light on how Canadians view transnational travel, as well as how this travel affects the communities they visit.

Research summary

More people from high-income countries in the North are relocating to cities and towns in the South. While the majority are retirees, some are adults who are working remotely. They are often attracted not only by the weather, but by the lower cost of living. Dr. Matthew Hayes, Canada Research Chair in Global and Transnational Studies, is studying this trend.

Hayes and his research team are building a relational theory of global inequalities through two research projects. The first is looking at the self-understanding of relatively privileged migrants in lower-income communities in Morocco. The second is exploring the lives of lower-income people in Cuenca, Ecuador, which has been undergoing urban upgrades to create more agreeable tourist spaces for newcomers from foreign countries.
