Research summary

The human microbiome is made up of the microbes (bacteria, bacteriophages, fungi, protozoa and viruses) that live inside and on the human body. With a better understanding of how these microbes interact, we can improve human health.

Dr. Morgan Langille, Canada Research Chair in Human Microbiomics, is advancing our knowledge of the human microbiome and bioinformatics (the use of computational tools and analysis to interpret biological data). He and his research team are analyzing clinical and population-based data while developing new bioinformatic and statistical approaches. Their research focuses on predicting cancer and developing new biomarkers that could play a role in earlier diagnoses, better treatment outcomes and better monitoring.
