Research involves

Using molecular biology and genome-wide measurements to understand the regulation and functions of sleep

Research relevance

This research will lead to the development of new strategies and therapeutic tools for patients suffering from sleep or mental health disorders.

Research summary

Sleep is important to our physical health, and is linked to mental health as well. Many mental health disorders can make it harder to sleep well, but poor sleep can also contribute to mental health problems. Dr. Valérie Mongrain, Canada Research Chair in Sleep Molecular Physiology, aim to shed light on this connection to improve the mental health of individuals with sleep disturbances.

She and her research team are identifying the molecular mechanisms of neuronal plasticity that govern sleep regulation and function, such as in brain recovery. They are also studying the molecular relationships between psychiatric and/or neurological diseases and wakefulness and sleep. The data they generate will support the development of new drugs that promote better sleep. Their work will also benefit Canadians who suffer from sleep disorders, and will reduce the societal costs that stem from the effects of sleep loss.
