Research summary

Although fish are Canada’s second-largest food export, little is known about the dynamics of many of our fish populations. Dr. Dominique Robert, Canada Research Chair in Fisheries Ecology, aims to make new breakthroughs to enhance the value of our fisheries and optimize their management.

Using cutting-edge technologies such as electronic tagging and otolith analysis (the otolith is a bone located in the inner ear), Robert and his research team are trying to determine the distribution and abundance of fish and to identify how climate change may alter the distribution of fish populations in the northwest Atlantic. Ultimately, the knowledge they generate will be used to better understand a variety of ecosystems and resources worldwide, and will support the sustainability of fisheries that are economically and culturally important to several Canadian provinces.
