Research involves

Designing new ways to solve problems related to the planning and management of transport and logistics systems in the context of uncertainty.

Research relevance

The research will identify innovative and economically viable solutions to transport and logistics problems, ultimately diminishing the negative impacts of these problems on the population as a whole.

Research summary

Stochastic problems are mathematical problems in which some of the data that are incorporated into the objective are uncertain. Stochastic optimization methods are procedures for maximizing or minimizing objective functions when considering stochastic problems. Over the past few decades, these methods have been proposed as essential tools in fields such as engineering, business, computer science and statistics.

As Canada Research Chair in Stochastic Optimization of Transportation and Logistics Systems, Dr. Walter Rei is looking to develop new stochastic optimization methods to address key planning problems in transportation and logistics systems, with a focus on scheduling services and managing resources to operate systems as efficiently as possible. He and his research team are also designing state-of-the art tools and algorithms for assessing uncertainty. Ultimately, they aim to develop methods to help support organizations and decision-makers facing these transportation and logistics planning problems.
