Research summary
Our thinking and behaviour are determined by a complex network of synaptic projections that form a hierarchy of nested and increasingly multi-functional neural circuits in our brains. But how exactly do these links and interactions determine perception, cognition and action? This question is at the heart of research by Dr. Bratislav Misic, Canada Research Chair in Network Neuroscience.
Misic is studying the relationship between structure and function in the brain by investigating individual variability and behaviour, normative lifespan variability, and regional heterogeneity. He and his research team are benchmarking structure-function coupling as a new brain phenotype for basic and clinical research. By better understanding how cognitive operations and complex behaviours emerge from the connections and interactions in our brains, researchers may be able to quantify the effects of disease on brain structure and function.
