Research summary

Historical and contemporary inequities have had a profound effect on Métis people. As Canada Research Chair in Métis Kinship and Land-based Wellness, Dr. Janice Gaudet is working with Métis communities to design and implement wellness methods as a way of addressing Indigenous women’s loss of cultural knowledge and land-based practices caused by these inequities.

Gaudet and her research team are focusing on two main areas of research. First, they are looking at the Métis kinship system from the perspective of Métis women’s relationships with people and place. Second, they are studying land-based practices as effective wellness strategies for mobilizing Indigenous women’s knowledge and inter-generational community engagement.
