Research summary

People frequently injure their feet and ankles. Unfortunately, these types of injuries often increase their risk of instability and reinjury—causing them to develop secondary problems like balance issues or decreased mobility, or to sustain fractures or concussions.

Dr. Michael Asmussen, Canada Research Chair in Neuromechanics and Human Physiology, is working on quantifying the control patients have over their foot and ankle joint stability during different types of movement, such as walking or running. He and his research team are trying to develop an innovative system to improve foot/ankle stability. Ultimately, their research will help clinicians develop personalized treatments to improve patients’ stability and mobility and prevent future injuries and falls.
