Research summary

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in Canada. Every year, more than 50,000 Canadians suffer from strokes—and nearly 14,000 die from the condition. As Canada Research Chair in Genomics and Genetics of Stroke, Dr. Glen Jickling is studying the genetics of stroke in order to develop better therapies and improve outcomes for patients.

Using a patient-focused approach, Jickling and his research team aim to improve our understanding of how the immune system contributes to brain injury, how blood clots form in stroke, and how blood vessels are injured in stroke patients. Ultimately, their goal is to develop new treatments and precision diagnostic tools to better treat and prevent this often deadly condition.
