Research summary
“Datafication” is the rendering of our social, cultural and political lives into productive data to feed machine learning and algorithmic decision-making.
As Canada Research Chair in Data, Democracy and Artificial Intelligence, Dr. Jennifer Pybus aims to contribute to this rapidly growing field. She and her research team are developing a material understanding of the technological objects within mobile devices that are integral to facilitating machine learning processes, such as algorithmic profiling, polarisation and bias. Their work will contribute to public organizations that support more engaged, data-literate citizens who have greater agency to participate meaningfully in public debate around artificial intelligence.
