Research Summary

Robotics systems, such as automated vehicles and artificial intelligence (AI) models, like ChatGPT, are raising significant ethical issues in our society. To respond to these challenges, we need coordinated research in applied ethics, engineering design methods, and policy-making. Dr. Jason Millar, Canada Research Chair in Ethical Engineering of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, aims to enable the next generation of ethicists, engineers and policy-makers to work together to innovate responsibly in the fields of robotics and AI.

He and his research team are finding new ways to bring multiple disciplines together to produce transdisciplinary frameworks, languages and tools to support the ethical engineering of robotics and AI. In particular, they are investigating emerging and ongoing ethical issues in robotics and AI and developing policy and policy tools that support responsible governance in these areas. Millar’s team are also developing cutting-edge, highly practical, ethical engineering design frameworks, tools and methods to support ethical innovation in robotics and AI.
