Research summary
North America is seeing a movement toward decolonization and the reclamation of Indigenous homelands. Dr. Maria Hupfield, Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Digital Arts and Performance, hopes to support this resurgence through her research.
Hupfield is creating a community medicine garden, an Indigenous creation studio, and a virtual living archive to probe how to develop and maintain good relations with land and within communities. She and her research team are working on projects that model accountable collaboration with Indigenous peoples. These projects are grounded in non-competitive community building, social practice art, wellness, Indigenous knowledge, land sovereignty and LGBTQ2+ inclusivity, especially for trans and queer people of colour and two-spirit folks. Ultimately, Hupfield aims to build networks of awakened solidarity.
