Green chemistry is about designing chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use of hazardous substances. Dr. Tomislav Friscic, Canada Research Chair in Mechanochemistry and Solid-State Chemistry, is on the cutting edge of this shift toward environmentally friendly processes in chemical research and manufacturing.
Friscic and his research team are working on cleaner, safer and scalable methods for making molecules and materials. To do this, they are studying solvent-free chemistry and the reactivity of solids as well as chemical reactions induced by mechanical force, known as mechanochemistry. They are also developing new instrumentation and chemical transformations for pharmaceuticals and advanced materials. Ultimately, they aim to push chemical research and manufacturing toward greener and more efficient processes.
