Research summary

Nations around the world are struggling to meet their climate targets against a backdrop of rising civil disobedience. This is creating a need for better approaches to energy governance.

Grounded in critical political economy and the study of energy transitions, Dr. Julie MacArthur, Canada Research Chair in Reimagining Capitalism, is examining the transformative potential of energy democracy in Canada. She and her research team are assessing the nature, diversity and impact of social and solidarity initiatives with a focus on questions of structure, power and ideas. Ultimately, they will produce a public database of Canadian energy democracy projects as well as comparative research on the actors and strategies involved and a framework for understanding their impact.
