Research summary
The world’s oceans are critical to human welfare and food security. They also provide an essential buffer against climate change and the decline of biodiversity. But if we want these benefits to continue, we need to ensure that our oceans are properly managed. Dr. Rashid Sumaila, Canada Research Chair in Interdisciplinary Ocean and Fisheries Economics, is studying the economic causes and impacts of changes in coastal and marine ecosystems to support sustainable ocean management.
He and his research team are studying the effects of climate change on the management of shared fish stocks. They are also examining how deoxygenation may affect biodiversity in the North Pacific Ocean and the people who depend on it. Part of their work also involves looking at the scope, magnitude and types of subsidies available to the aquaculture sector, and how these may affect its economic efficiency and the sustainability of global fisheries.
