Research summary
Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, is poised to revolutionize marine manufacturing in Canada. As Canada Research Chair in Marine Additive Manufacturing, Dr. Mohsen Mohammadi is leading a multidisciplinary research team with expertise in materials characterization, additive manufacturing and simulation to work toward several goals that will support this progress.
Mohammadi and his research team are introducing a set of additive manufacturing process parameters for a new grade of high-strength, high-corrosion, resistant stainless steel meant specifically for marine applications. They are also using heat treatment procedures and interface engineering concepts to develop optimum microstructures for the most ideal mechanical properties. Finally, they are developing new procedures for maintaining marine stainless steel parts.
