Research summary

Because membrane-less organelles play critical roles in the processes that occur within cells to maintain their health and function, regulating the dynamics of these organelles is important to cell health. For example, dysregulated membrane-less organelle dynamics can contribute to the development of neurodegenerative diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

As Canada Research Chair in Membrane-less Organelle Proteomics, Dr. Ji-Young Youn aims to better understand the crucial role that the dynamics of organelles play in stress and disease. She and her research team are using innovative methods to conduct a proteomic investigation of membrane-less organelles and map the proteomes linked to their physical state. Ultimately, they hope to contribute to new treatments for ALS.
