Research summary

Wearable and implantable medical devices that incorporate machine learning, AI and the internet of things are poised to transform personal health care. But these systems face challenges when it comes to adapting massive datasets and algorithms. They can also run into difficulties when transferring data due to latency and network issues. There’s a growing preference for systems that can process data and make decisions locally—without needing to send data to the cloud or a central server for analysis.

As Canada Research Chair in Smart Biomedical Microsystems, Dr. Benoit Gosselin is exploring medical instruments, material science, AI and microsystems manufacturing to enhance the intelligence and sustainability of biomedical systems while making them smaller and smaller. He and his research team aim to develop intelligent sensors using advanced machine learning to improve precision and reduce latency in neurotechnologies, smart prosthetics and vital-sign monitoring, all of which will improve patients’ experiences.
