Research summary

Interactive digital and new media art, created through incubator labs, workshops, publications, exhibitions and symposia, can create opportunities for community engagement in public spaces. As Canada Research Chair in Collaboration, Public Art, and Interactive and Digital Media, Dr. Julie Nagam is exploring models, methodologies and teaching approaches in digital and new media. She is trying to answer the question: how can this work benefit marginalized communities, including Indigenous people, new Canadians, people of colour, women, youth and the LGBTQ2S+ community?

She and her research team are continuing to partner with digital and new media labs, expanding their focus to include larger-scale incubators. Their work will result in public exhibitions, creative interventions, incubators and symposia. By mobilizing innovative, interactive and digital projects on a local and international scale, they hope to shift new media technologies into the hands of marginalized populations, creating important new opportunities in the arts, sciences and design.
