Research summary
The number of Canadians over the age of 65 is expected to double in the next 20 years. As our population ages, it is critical that we discover and put in place effective strategies to encourage healthy aging. Evidence shows that exercise promotes both cognitive health and mobility as we age, but it is unclear how much exercise we should be getting. To develop precise recommendations, we need to better understand how exercise benefits cognition and mobility. As Canada Research Chair in Healthy Aging, Dr. Teresa Liu-Ambrose hopes to generate this knowledge.
By focusing on those most at risk for decline, she and her research team aim to generate precise recommendations that will maximize the benefits of exercise for individuals. Their findings will promote healthy aging by shaping practice guidelines that can be implemented in communities and integrated into health-care services.
