Research summary

Artificial intelligence (AI) could boost productivity and improve the delivery of public services-but without effective governance, it could also create new biases and amplify discrimination, especially when used in automated decision-making. In Canada, the federal government has published a directive to ensure that automated decision systems, including those that use AI, are both responsible and ethical.

As Canada Research Chair in Governance and Artificial Intelligence, Dr. Adegboyega Ojo is examining governance mechanisms for trustworthy AI-enabled public services. He and his research team are establishing requirements around the use of AI and developing frameworks and mechanisms to ensure that AI in public services benefits citizens. They are also establishing evidence to show how these mechanisms affect stakeholders’ perceptions of AI and organizational trustworthiness. Their work will give Canadian government agencies the tools they need to implement the directive.
