Research summary
People with disabilities experience many barriers that limit the activities they can do and the places they can go, including barriers that prevent them from participating in social and cultural activities, such as music-making. As Canada Research Chair in Music, Inclusion, and Accessibility, Dr. Adam Patrick Bell is examining ways to make music more accessible for people with disabilities, with a focus on instrument design.
Using community-based research methods and knowledge mobilization, he and his research team are examining approaches to designing music-making experiences and instruments led by people with disabilities. They are also developing accessible instruments and experiences to foster inclusive music-making communities across Canada, and sharing the knowledge and experiences of people with disabilities who make music.
