Research summary

The “water-food nexus” refers to the interconnected relationship between water resources and the production, distribution and consumption of food—and it speaks to the critical role of water in agriculture and food security. To sustain water resources and eradicate food insecurity, we need to identify the key players in the water-food nexus and develop solutions that can be put into action.

To that end, Dr. Sara Sadri, Canada Research Chair in Remote Sensing and Water Security, is conducting several studies. She and her research team are analyzing the potential savings from how farms in Prince Edward Island manage water and use fertilizers. They are also trying to predict drought and flood conditions and analyze water quantity and quality from catchment to household levels. Finally, they are developing a seasonal household food security index using socio-economic indicators and the data they collect. Their findings will have applications in rural areas throughout North America and around the world.
