Research summary

The residues of cultural contact and conflict influence the way we understand historical events. This makes the study of early European art music (classical music) across porous and fluctuating borders a powerful tool for exposing structural exclusions (systemic or institutionalized forms of exclusion) in generally accepted history.

As Canada Research Chair in Music, Contact, and Conflict, Dr. Doreen (Linda) Pearse is examining how European art music has affected and been shaped through cultural encounter. She and her research team are providing tools to decentre embedded disciplinary paradigms and identify inclusive approaches and methodologies. Their research will stimulate conversations about how we negotiate identity and reveal music’s potential to facilitate dialogue and exchange.
