Research summary

A variety of financial and systemic factors influence our well-being and access to health care. These factors—such as income, education, access to transportation, and the health-care system itself—are known as the financial and structural determinants of health. Dr. Candace Nykiforuk, Canada Research Chair in Community Environments and Public Policy for Well-Being, is studying these in the context of structural inequities, financial well-being and community environments.

She and her research team are continuing their established pan-Canadian Chronic Disease Prevention Survey, extending it to include an international examination of policy influencer and general public knowledge, attitudes and beliefs concerning public policies related to financial well-being and the prevention of chronic diseases. Ultimately, they hope to shed light on the relationship between financial well-being and health in order to guide public policy.
