Research summary

Canadian history has traditionally been viewed through a western lens and with a focus on the actions of men. But Indigenous women have historically played central and powerful roles in their communities as matriarchs and are often described as the custodians of traditions and cultures. As Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Histories and Historical Practice in Canada, Dr. Lianne Leddy is bridging discussions about Indigenous histories and methodologies with traditional western approaches using an Indigenous feminist lens.

She and her research team are examining Indigenous women’s and families’ historical experiences in the Great Lakes watershed across a broad time period. They are also creating a research hub to support community-driven projects that better meet the research needs of Indigenous communities. They are also engaging in public outreach to tap into Indigenous knowledge. Ultimately, their research will contribute to reconciliation, amplify Indigenous voices and train highly qualified Indigenous personnel.
