Research summary
Environmental modelling helps inform decisions and policies by improving our understanding of natural systems and how they react to changing conditions and hazards, such as exposure to air pollution and toxic chemicals. As Canada Research Chair in Environmental Modelling for Policy, Dr. Amanda Giang is developing systems modelling frameworks that will shed light on the interactions between human activity, environmental impacts and human well-being.
She and her research team aim to address methodological challenges in impact assessments, where innovations in weaving emerging data sources and quantitative and qualitative methods can yield insights for both technology and policy interventions. In particular, they are assessing the environmental impacts of decarbonizing maritime transport, characterizing the cumulative impacts of multiple air pollutants on human exposure and equity, and disentangling the effects of climate and human activity on contaminants in traditional Arctic foods.
