Research summary

Neural machine translation (NMT) uses machine learning to automatically translate text from one language into another. NMT uses artificial neural networks modelled on the human brain to predict the likelihood of certain sequences of words. Online translators depend on this technology. As Canada Research Chair in Translation, Technologies and Society, Dr. Lynne Bowker is investigating how Canadians currently use NMT.

She and her research team aim to better understand how this technology fits into our society and how we can leverage its potential for things such as trade, health care, knowledge exchange or leisure. They are mapping NMT users and uses, and developing training resources to help Canadians from different sectors—such as students, journalists, immigrants and health-care workers—to use this technology responsibly and effectively. Bowker and her team are also evaluating new applications for this innovative technology.
