Research summary
Health inequalities—differences in people’s health across a population and between specific groups—are a major and growing public health issue. To tackle them, especially where infectious diseases are concerned, it is necessary to capture all the relevant data, apply rigorous methods to determine the magnitude of the inequalities, and identify opportunities for sustainable change.
As Canada Research Chair in Methods to Address Health Inequalities, Dr. Mabel Caribali is leading research that looks at all stages of the data process, combining the study of social public health issues with innovative methods to address overlooked biases in the analysis of inequalities. She and her research team are also consolidating the analysis of intersecting social factors by expanding statistical methods and integrating qualitative and mixed-methods approaches in their analysis. Their work could have meaningful implications for developing practical policies to address inequalities and disease prevention.
