Research summary

Fish are essential to food security and economic development in northern communities. But these areas are changing faster than anywhere else on the globe due to the climate crisis. To better predict how these environmental changes are affecting marine wildlife in northern wetlands, rivers, lakes and other aquatic areas, we must study the basic ecological and evolutionary processes that determine these species’ abilities to adapt and acclimate.

As Canada Research Chair in Integrative Biology of Northern Aquatic Resources, Dr. Jean-Sébastien Moore aims to develop this vital knowledge. He and his research team are drawing on recent developments in genomics, environmental DNA, and acoustic telemetry (high-frequency sounds used to track aquatic animals’ movements) to shed light on the historical, environmental and human factors that are likely to shape the quality and availability of fish species.
