Research summary

The internet of things (IoT) has brought about tremendous possibilities by automating and streamlining processes through interconnected devices. But at the same time, the IoT has made large-scale critical sectors, such as health care and industrial control systems, vulnerable to cyberattacks that could compromise the confidentiality, integrity and availability of their connected systems.

Dr. Paria Shirani, Canada Research Chair in Cybersecurity, is building new technologies, methods, algorithms and datasets to address the scientific and engineering challenges that have been introduced by IoT technologies. To do this, she and her research team are using a combination of techniques, such as static and dynamic analysis, network traffic and log analysis, and various artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms. By identifying solutions to safeguard our current and future critical infrastructure against cybersecurity threats, their research will benefit manufacturers, utilities, and cybersecurity researchers and practitioners in the public and private sectors.
