Research summary

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more central to decision-making across industries, concerns about algorithmic bias and its impacts on society are growing. AI systems can reinforce discriminatory patterns, affecting areas such as hiring, lending and law enforcement. As Canada Research Chair in EDI Issues in Artificial Intelligence, Dr. Maryam Ghasemaghaei is tackling this issue by analyzing biases in AI algorithms and developing strategies to promote fairness and inclusion.

Using experimental studies and a socio-technical approach, she and her research team are integrating equity, diversity and inclusion principles into AI design, offering solutions that can mitigate bias. As global AI investments soar, this research is critical for shaping policy, industry practices and ethical AI development. By providing insights that policy-makers, industry leaders and technologists can act on, Ghasemaghaei’s work is helping to ensure that AI is not only powerful, but also fair, transparent and aligned with societal values.
