Research summary

Indigenous rights advocates must navigate many arenas—from courtrooms to truth commissions to protests. They make choices and adopt strategies based on legal-political contexts, the tools available to them, and the opportunities and obstacles that exist to assert their rights. As Canada Research Chair in Comparative Indigenous Rights, Dr. Jeremy Patzer’s aim is to deepen our understanding of Indigenous rights advancement in Canada and the global North.

He and his research team are using unique, transdisciplinary approaches to shed light on Indigenous Peoples’ experiences of navigating the varied avenues of rights assertion connected to law and politics. They are identifying the opportunities and obstacles that advocates encounter in various contexts of struggle and examining the effects these have on rights strategies and aspirations. Patzer’s team is also engaging with Indigenous Peoples to co-produce knowledge that will equip and empower them to engage in more effective activism and rights advancement.
