Research summary

Demand for so-called critical materials, necessary for the energy transition, has led to steady growth in the mining sector. As Canada Research Chair in Territorial and Socio-Environmental Transitions, Dr. Nicolas Hubert is examining contradictory development demands that can lead a given jurisdiction to simultaneously support mineral extraction and beef up environmental conservation programs.

By comparing case studies from Quebec, Canada and elsewhere, Hubert and his research team are pondering how these contradictory demands might intensify the cumulative effects of climate change, reshape socio-environmental systems, and generate environmental, social, economic and political reactions at various levels. Ultimately, their work will help improve and adapt public policies and land development programs associated with the energy transition as well as practices and regulations associated with extractive development and environmental conservation.
