Research summary

Clean, reliable water remains out of reach for many remote communities in Canada and around the world. Dr. Amy Bilton, Canada Research Chair in Engineering for Sustainable Global Development, is tackling this challenge by focusing on practical, field-tested solutions to improve water systems, such as rainwater harvesting and reverse osmosis.

Bilton and her research team are studying how these systems are currently used in remote areas, identifying key pain points—especially membrane fouling, a major cause of failure. They are developing advanced imaging tools to better understand and prevent membrane damage, which can extend the life of filtration systems. They are then testing these improvements in the field to ensure they meet the needs of remote communities facing water insecurity. By blending engineering innovation with real-world constraints, Bilton’s work supports more robust, cost-effective water systems that improve health and access to clean water for underserved populations.
