Research summary
An increasing number of transgender and gender-diverse youth are seeking individualized gender-affirming care, yet few tools exist to measure the outcomes that matter to them. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) offer vital insights into young people’s well-being and experiences, supporting more responsive care. As Canada Research Chair in Patient-Reported Outcomes, Dr. Anne Klassen is developing and validating a PROM that is tailored to the needs of transgender and gender-diverse youth.
The PROM captures outcomes such as body image, voice, social functioning and experiences with gender-affirming care. Built through collaboration with youth and clinical experts, it is designed to be both scientifically rigorous and clinically useful. Klassen and her research team aim to implement the PROM in Canada, Europe and the US to track outcomes over time and improve care for transgender and gender-diverse youth globally.
