Research summary

The global push for faster, smaller and more flexible electronics is driving demand for new manufacturing approaches—especially to support technologies like artificial intelligence, augmented reality and the internet of things. As Canada Research Chair in Advanced Small-Scale Materials and Manufacturing, Dr. Changhong Cao is developing next-generation techniques to produce ultra-thin, high-performance electronic devices using two-dimensional materials (2DM).

These materials, just a few atoms thick, promise to revolutionize microelectronics due to their exceptional speed and flexibility. Cao and his research team aim to better understand how the properties of 2DM evolve during manufacturing. They are also developing scalable, high-quality assembly methods. Their findings could unlock new insights into the behaviour of 2DM and lead to the consistent, cost-effective production of powerful new devices. By advancing the science and technology of 2DM manufacturing, Cao’s research is accelerating innovation across sectors like nanotechnology, smart manufacturing, and next-generation electronics.
