Research summary
Surgery is a vital part of modern health care, but recovery doesn’t always go smoothly for patients. Many experience complications or a slower return to health than expected—and the number of such experiences is increasing as our population ages and complex medical needs drive demand for more surgeries. Improving surgical outcomes is now a global public health priority.
As Canada Research Chair in Surgical Outcomes, Dr. Julio Fiore Jr. aims to advance evidence-based surgical care and improve recovery after surgery. He and his research team are developing tools to measure patient-reported outcomes and evaluating which interventions lead to better results. Their work includes assessing digital health tools that support recovery and rethinking routine practices that may cause harm, such as reliance on opioids for pain control. By helping clinicians and health systems adopt safer, more effective strategies, their research will improve postoperative outcomes for patients.
