Research summary

Many people who use street drugs face overlapping health challenges, including a toxic drug supply and infectious diseases. As Canada Research Chair in Health Disparities and Public Health, Dr. Adrian Guta is integrating substance use health approaches with community-based methods to understand how social determinants and structural inequities shape health outcomes.

He and his research team are developing and evaluating evidence-based interventions that improve access to health care, with a focus on integrated models that bridge community outreach, primary care, and emergency and acute care. By partnering directly with affected communities and health-care providers, their work is creating practical, equitable solutions and informing public health policy. These efforts aim to reduce preventable deaths, improve care for marginalized populations, and guide systemic changes that address Canada’s complex public health challenges.
