Research summary

While playing an essential role in a country’s cultural diversity, linguistic minorities are often confronted by challenges relating to the recognition and transmission of their language.

As Canada Research Chair in Comparative Linguistic Minorities, Dr. Jean-Rémi Carbonneau aims to deepen our knowledge of the causes of minority language erosion by determining the impact of this decline on linguistic practices, representations and attitudes. Carbonneau and his team are exploring the strategies used to sustainably revitalize these languages. In addition to expanding theoretical knowledge on linguistic conflicts and their consequences for the vitality of minority languages, their work will raise public and political awareness of the importance of linguistic diversity. By documenting best practices in the fight against linguistic erosion, they hope to reach the authorities charged with defining and implementing language policies.
