Recognizing Canada Research Chairs who are trailblazers on International Women’s Day 2016

Canada Research Chairs are making waves with their groundbreaking research. To mark International Women’s Day on March 8, we pay tribute to some of the leading women researchers who have received international recognition for their work in the past year. Congratulations!

• Molly Shoichet, Canada Research Chair in Tissue Engineering, is a winner of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award. Shoichet was recognized for her discovery of a new method of delivering drugs directly to the spinal cord and brain to promote recovery after problems such as a paralyzing spinal injury or a stroke.
• Victoria Kaspi, Canada Research Chair in Observational Astrophysics, won Canada’s top science prize, the Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering. Kaspi received the award for being one of the world’s leading experts on neutron stars, the ancient remnants of the most massive stars in the Milky Way. Kaspi was also awarded the 2015 Killam Prize in natural sciences for her research.
• Julie Lefebvre, Canada Research Chair in Developmental Neural Circuitry, was awarded the Sloan Research Fellowship in Neuroscience. Lefebvre received the award for her work to understand the mechanisms of how the brain is wired. She aims to advance our knowledge of how genetic alterations affect brain development and disorders.
