Research involves

Studying musculoskeletal trauma and surgical outcomes.

Research relevance

The research is uncovering novel strategies to improve outcomes following orthopaedic injury.

Research summary

Musculoskeletal problems include injuries or disorders of the muscles, nerves, tendons, joints, cartilage and spinal discs. When treatments for these issues don’t succeed, patients may undergo surgery. Dr. Mohit Bhandari, Canada Research Chair in Surgical Innovation, is looking for ways to advance surgical innovations in the treatment of musculoskeletal trauma.

He and his research team are also uncovering insights related to intimate partner violence in patients undergoing surgery and exploring ways to prevent adverse outcomes in surgery. To do this, they are running multinational randomized trials, observational studies and a national knowledge translation program. They also plan to extend their research to study opioid reduction interventions in surgery. Their research will address the growing burden of orthopaedic trauma injuries worldwide, identify cost-effective treatments, shed more light on aspects of domestic violence, and identify and reduce adverse outcomes during surgery.
