Social Media for Learning and Research

In recent years, social media have become part of the fabric of contemporary societies and educational systems. However, the ways in which social media are used and experienced by students and scholars remain poorly understood.

There is a pressing worldwide need to understand students and scholars use of, and experiences with emerging social technologies. Dr. George Veletsianos, Canada Research Chair in Innovative Learning and Technology, is exploring the use and application of such emerging technologies in education.

Higher education is at a critical junction, with universities facing a number of challenges and opportunities. Veletsianos is exploring the potential and pitfalls of social media for addressing these challenges.

Veletsianos’ research will increase understanding about the roles played by social media, and will provide guidance to governments, non-governmental organizations, and learning institutions about how emerging technologies can be used to enhance Canada’s higher education system.
